What is Acupuncture?
Practiced for over 5,000 years in Chinawhere it
originated, Acupuncture is part of the holistic system of traditional
Chinese medicine (TCM) which encourages the body to heal itself
naturally. Acupuncture is one of the best ways to restore balance
(ie: health) in the body. In this well-studied technique, a skilled
practitioner utilizes micro ( 3x's the width of a human hair) anesthetized
points to specific areas on the body for prevention and treatment
of illness.
What are the Health Benefits?
While Acupuncture has been used to treat scores of illnesses in
Asia, its primary use in the United States has been to relieve chronic
pain -- such as that caused by ailments as arthritis, headache,
PMS, and back injuries, and to assist in withdrawal from drug addiction
and tobacco and alcohol dependency.
Today more innovative applications for acupuncture are being explored
by both conventional and alternative practitioners, including its
use as an analgesic to reduce pain during surgery. In 1997, an advisory
panel for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) evaluated hundreds
of acupuncture studies and concluded that the therapy is an effective
treatment for post-operative pain after dental surgery and for nausea
induced by chemotherapy, pregnancy "morning sickness"
and anesthesia. The NIH panel also called acupuncture a useful adjunct
treatment for a variety of other conditions listed here.
